Arcadian Farms has been an important part of the Holliston community for 70 years. We continue to supply Holliston, Medway, Sherborn, Millis and other surrounding towns with fresh produce and flowering plants. We also participate in community activities such as Holliston Day, Holliston Farms Day and many other events.
Emigrating from Greece in 1912, Peter Koshivas brought his love of the land and his farming background with him to America. He married his wife, Katherine, and
decided it was time to invest in some land and begin providing for his wife and future family. They decided that Holliston was the place for them and Arcadian Farms was established in 1931. Peter and
Katherine bought an existing farm, originally a dairy farm, and began to mainly raise poultry. Peter sold eggs from the farm on a route that took him to Boston and back three to four times per week.
From Greece, Peter also brought with him the art of grafting and raising apple trees. Apples became a staple at Arcadian Farms. In addition to eggs and apples, the farm had some livestock and grew
Produce was sold at a roadside stand until the early 1970’s. In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, their youngest son, Michael, began to take over the farm operations. Mike envisioned a larger retail store and soon began construction on a new farm stand. The family slowly got away from poultry and other livestock and began increasing the vegetable, apple, and pear crops. The main crops became apples and corn. With the help of his brothers, Dean and Denny, niece and nephews, Mike grew Arcadian Farms into a full service farm stand. He added products such as milk, bread, cheese, relishes, jams, and syrups. Mike also invested in an apple cider press and greenhouses. In the winter, the farm raises annuals, perennials, and hanging baskets to sell in the spring. In the fall, chrysanthemums, corn stalks and other decorations can be found for sale. For many years, fall time also meant apple cider time and Arcadian Farms won numerous local taste tests. Through the years, Mike became involved in helping to promote local agriculture and keep local farming operations on the fore front of the Holliston community.
Arcadian continues to be involved in the community by helping to provide local youth with the opportunity to learn about agriculture. We strive to demonstrate the importance of agriculture and the benefits of using of locally grown produce. In Mike’s memory, we have established a scholarship fund that helps Holliston High School seniors with funding for college if they choose a field related to agriculture or environmental sciences. As we go into the future with the third generation of the Koshivas family, we look forward to continuing to provide the community the freshest fruits and vegetables every day.
